About the Team

Mission: To spread the principles and values of FIRST while increasing enthusiasm about math, science, and technology in our community.

Goal: To enrich the lives of our members and all those we interact with through our outreach programs and the spirit of FIRST.

The students of the Team 226 come from rival schools on opposite sides of town; such a blend is unique. The fields of FIRST are the only playing field where both Colts and Hawks unite as one team.  Most of us don’t think about, let alone single out, that a member is from a different school; what matters is that we are the Hammerheads.  Every member works cohesively, keeping us swimming towards success.  Student workgroup leaders and a President, with the help of adult mentors, manage the Hammerheads.  The team consists of 70 Troy School District Students, 2 Troy School District employees, 5 community mentors, and 8 GM engineers and skilled tradesmen.

Team 226, the Hammerheads, joined a partnership with the FIRST Robotics Competition in 1999 and asked GM to be a corporate sponsor.  Both of these partnerships allow our team members to learn, mature, and grow while having a great deal of fun and building long lasting friendships.  The Hammerheads are heavily involved in the community and our school district.  Our members volunteer at programs for the less fortunate, as well as STEM and robotics related camps.  We  help /collaborate with other school clubs and our fundraisers, like Movie Night, bring students from all over Troy together.  From JrFLL to FRC, we are involved in all levels of FIRST; with “SharkFest”, our team run FLL Tournament / JrFLL Exhibition, being one of our proudest accomplishments.

The Hammerheads are thrilled with our many FIRST awards including Regional Great Lakes Winner (2003), West Michigan Sportsmanship (2007) & Chairman’s (2008), State Website (2009), Motorola Quality (2010 & 2011), Cass Tech Chairman’s (2010) Awards, along with OCCRA Spirit and many cherished peer awards presented to us by other FIRST teams.
